PERMITTING

The Florida Building Code stipulates that building permits are required for replacement of windows and glass doors.  Working without a permit is illegal and can result in fines, work stoppages, and possible problems when selling your home. Only licensed contractors or homeowners (acting as owner-builders) may obtain a permit to perform the job.

TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A PERMIT FOR INSTALLING WINDOWS AND DOORS
  • Photos of the property, which cannot be Polaroids nor taken in black & white.
  • Two copies of the manufacturer's Product Control Approval. All letters in the Product Control Approval must be 8 ½”w x 11”h and all drawings must be 11”w x 17”h.
  • Two copies of the site-specific wind-load calculations signed and sealed by an engineer for the openings where the windows and/or doors are to be installed.
  • Two copies of the full floor plans and elevations drawn at ¼” to 1’ scale.
  • If the windows and/or doors to be installed will not be located in the existing openings, or the size of the openings are being altered, then a submittal must be made to the Board of Architects.
HOW CAN YOU OBTAIN A PERMIT?

Abbe Window customers never have to worry about the hassle of obtaining building permits.  Abbe Window is qualified by Stan Nathan (owner & operator) as a licensed general contractor of the State of Florida and will obtain any permitting required by law, on your behalf, when agreed to in our contract.  Abbe Window utilizes structural engineers to make all necessary drawings and wind-load calculations to submit a complete application to the corresponding municipality.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO OBTAIN A PERMIT?

The turn-around time to pull a permit varies significantly from municipality to municipality. Once we submit the necessary paperwork, it takes the municipality between 2 and 4 weeks to issue an approved building permit.
